Today, we take a look at Monitoring and Troubleshooting VMware Horizon 7 Virtual Desktop Infrastructure VDI with ControlUp 8.1 and see how this can easily be done. The most important thing to remember when setting up the file-share, is to give “Domain Computers” write access. VMware Horizon is an extremely popular option that organizations may be leveraging to enable remote work for business-critical resources. Configure VMware Logon Monitor to send logs to file-share.I have divided this session into the following segments: Below I will describe how to set up VMware Logon Monitor to send logs to a file-share, which is handy when troubleshooting multiple desktops with long logon time. It is also extremely helpful to use VMware vRealize Operations Manager to troubleshoot Horizon issues. VMware Logon Monitor is a service that is automatically installed when installing the VMware Horizon Agent in the template. I recommend using Splunk universal forwarder dedicated for your Syslog input. You can configure a Syslog input and create a VMWare index on port 514. You can have your connection servers configured to send logs to Splunk. This is most often related to MS Windows 10 environments, although all the proper adjustments have been done according to VMware’s guide about creating a template for Horizon: “ Creating an Optimized Windows Image for a VMware Horizon Virtual Desktop” In these cases, I find it very helpful to use VMware Logon Monitor to troubleshoot login issues. VMWare Horizon can send data to Splunk as Syslog target. From time to time, I run into issues with long login times for some customers.
